What a gym conversion involves

Gym use places specific demands on a basement that ordinary habitable rooms do not. Our in-house structural engineers and build teams address each one within a single fixed-price contract:

• Ceiling height — dig-downs and underpinning to achieve the clear height free-weight and cardio zones need.
• Floor build-up — load-rated screeds and impact-absorbing rubber flooring over waterproofed slabs.
• Ventilation — mechanical ventilation with heat recovery sized for exercise-level air change, not standard habitable-room rates.
• Acoustic isolation — resilient layers and isolated linings so early sessions never reach the bedrooms above or the neighbours through the party wall.
• Services & finishes — lighting zones, mirrored walls, AV cabling and a shower or wet room where space allows.

Planning and approvals

Most basement gym conversions of existing cellars proceed without planning permission, but dig-downs, light wells and works to listed buildings or properties in conservation areas need consent.
