Using massive panels of glass (frequently up to 4 or 5 meters tall) bonded with 2mm structural silicone joints, the goal is to eliminate all visible metal frames. The ceiling and the floor seamlessly continue out into the garden terrace without interruption.
This aesthetic is favored by clients demanding hyper-modern minimalism. However, navigating pure frameless glazing through a Conservation Area requires our Planning Directorate to forcibly argue the concept of "Lightweight Intervention"—proving to the council that the sheer glass is entirely deferential and allows the historic host building to be read with total clarity precisely because the glass is visually "invisible."
4. The Thermal Black Hole (Part L Regulations)
Steel is a phenomenal conductor of heat. While historic, single-glazed steel windows turned rooms into freezing ice-boxes, modern Crittall-style doors must utilize highly complex "thermal breaks" (polyurethane insulators injected into the steel frames) to comply with the brutal energy-efficiency standards of Building Control Part L.
If you purchase cheap, un-broken steel doors, Building Control will refuse to sign off the extension due to excessive heat loss. 5. The Weight and Access Crisis

Because terraced houses in RBKC have zero rear access, these massive fragile sheets must be lifted directly over the roof of the 4-storey townhouse using a giant mobile crane parked out on the street.
Executing this crane lift requires our Project Management team to secure emergency road closure licenses from the RBKC Highways department (which can take 12 weeks to approve) and coordinate pinpoint-accuracy dropping of the glass into the rear garden. The logistical complexity of merely getting the glass onto the site frequently dictates which glazing system the client ultimately chooses.
