Battery-operated smoke detectors are illegal in a full refurbishment. Building control mandates a fully interconnected, mains-wired fire alarm system spanning every floor. Furthermore, certain primary rooms require dedicated "escape windows"—requiring bespoke hinges that open fully to allow a firefighter wearing breathing apparatus to enter the building from a ladder.
